Coffee and Chat: How to Break Through Barriers

I met with a client today for a Coffee and Chat session. My main goal is to help my client’s break through barriers. Today it was important to break through barriers that occur when leaving an abusive relationship. We grabbed a coffee, sat outside and brainstormed all the steps she needs to take in order to reach her ultimate goal.  Unfortunately, she, like so many people, is in an abusive relationship.  She wants to leave but there are so many barriers for her to break through.  Here are some questions that initially popped up!

              What about my pets?

              Where will I go?

Can I bring my belongings and the things that are important to me?

How will I take my things?

How far do I need to go?

How will I get to where I need to go?

How much money will it take?

These are some serious questions that need analysis…quickly.  When it’s time to go you don’t always have time to put things in place, but if you start planning, get supports ready, and problem solve the most important things to you, leaving will be a teeny, tiny smidge easier.  I say teeny and tiny because it will probably be the hardest thing you have ever done.  It will also be the bravest!  You will become a hero!

The most important barrier to my client is her pet.  Many shelters don’t take pets unless they are registered as some sort of support animal.   Many hotels, rentals, etc. don’t take pets either.  It is a struggle for pet owners sometimes just to take a vacation!  Believe me I know, I have 5 dogs!  Vacations and moves are always a complete nightmare!  Not to mention evacuating from inclement weather!

Register Your Pet as an Emotional Support Animal

Since most shelters require a pet to be a registered support animal, my client first got a letter from her doctor confirming need.  Then today we went to US Service Animal Registrar and registered her pet as an emotional support animal.  It did cost money but she was able to get everything she needs for under $100.  Now she has peace of mind that when the day comes, she has the appropriate paperwork in hand and she can take her beloved pet with her.  Her pet does provide her with emotional support by loving her no matter what, every day, always.

The next individual Coffee and Chat session will tackle another barrier and I am confident that she will have everything in place when and if the time comes.
